On February 1, we drove out with my parents to SE Portland to have dim sum at Wong's King Seafood, the Chinese restaurant we've found with the most consistent high reviews. It took at least 30 minutes from their house, plus then we had to wait in the foyer for another 30 minutes, but it was worth it. Very tasty dumplings and buns. (Or maybe they seemed extra tasty because of the anticipation!) It's definitely someplace to return to, but it's too bad that it basically takes up an entire afternoon. The area, SE Division Street, is an unlovely stretch of road that I hear is developing as a new "Asian area," with restaurants and shops. Not very pretty, but there's some good food to be had.
We returned home via streets rather than the freeway, and got to see some more of Portland. We drove through the Laurelhurst neighborhood, which is beautiful -- it reminded me of a cross between Old Palo Alto and some of the Boston suburbs we saw, like Newton. But that would be a very long commute for David. And probably too spendy as well. :)
